Naira scarcity: I sympathize with you, Buhari tells Nigerians

  President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday told Nigerians that he sympathizes with them on the the implementation of the monetary policy that led to the redesigning of 200, 500 and 1,000 Naira and mopping up of same. The President spoke on Thursday on the recent crisis occasioned by implementation of the policy which has led to the scarcity of the notes. Buhari’s speech comes on the heels of the nationwide outrage over the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Recall Nigerians have been battling with the scarcity of new naira notes— a development that has led to queues at banking halls, and automated teller machine (ATM) points. There have been protests in some parts of the country due to the scarcity of new naira notes. On Wednesday, there were protests across the country as banks were destroyed while security operatives reportedly gunned down some persons in Edo State. All old Naira note are legal tender till April 10

 President Muhammadu Buhari is considering extending the validity of old naira notes by 60 days, TheCable understands. This is to avoid disobeying the order of the Supreme Court of Nigeria which ruled that the old N1,000, N500 and N200 notes remain valid until it delivers judgment in the case filed by some states against the federal government. The CBN had insisted that the deadline of February 10 would not be changed but a senior government official told TheCable that Buhari was worried about the hardship faced by Nigerians as well as the legal implications of disobeying the order of the constitutional court. The official told TheCable that this was the focus of a meeting between presidency officials and the leadership of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) as well as the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) until the early hours of Wednesday. Police summon 5 officers for allegedly extorting student

  The Police Command in Lagos State has summoned five police officers alleged to have extorted N155,000 from a student. The command spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this on Wednesday on his verified Twitter handle . Hundeyin said that all the officers were summoned to the state headquarters in Ikeja. He said those summoned included an Assistant Supretendant of Police and four Inspectors, adding that further updates will be provided on the case. NAN reports that Sanni Faruk, a Polytechnic student, had alleged that five police officers attached to Meiran Division extorted N155,000 from him on Sunday. He alleged that the officers forced him out of a bus at Abule-Egba while on his way to school, handcuffed and took him to Meiran police station. He claimed that while at the station, he was forced to transfer the money in his bank account to an OPay account before he was released. Federal Ministry of Humanitarian and Disaster Management, Sadiya Umar Farouq. As maintained by the company’s MD, Mr. Robbi Ovie Gospel, John brought businesses he claimed he got through a senator ( where he works at the time he brought the transactions). Naira Redesign: Buhari to address Nigerians today

  President Muhammadu Buhari will make a national broadcast on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at 7 am. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President of Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina. According to the statement, “Television, radio stations and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria for the broadcast.”
